A spiritual successor to Making A Murderer is in the works, but it’ll be a little different to the original Netflix series: instead of following Stephen Avery‘s defence team and his push to have a murder sentence overturned, Convicting A Murderer will focus on the prosecutors who put him behind bars.
ICYMI, Avery was convicted of the 2005 murder of photographer Teresa Halbach, and Making A Murderer presented the case that law enforcement officials effectively framed Avery over her death.
Filmmaker Shawn Rech said his new series will attempt to redress Making A Murderer‘s “one-sided” nature by giving law enforcement officials, including District Attorney Ken Kratz and Lead Investigator Tom Fassbender, a platform the initial series did not.
“This docu-series will examine the case and the allegations of police wrongdoing from a broader perspective,” Rech said in a statement.
“It will also share with viewers the traumatic effects of being found guilty and vilified in the court of public opinion.”
In an attempt to ostensibly provide a more even-handed cinematic analysis, Rech said the series will “present all of the evidence in the Avery case from the perspective of both the prosecution and the defense and see if viewers feel the same way they did two years ago following the first season of Making A Murderer.”
Previously, Rech worked on A Murder In The Park, another documentary tracking a controversial wrongful conviction.
Rech’s series, which reportedly boasts a multi-million dollar budget, is not affiliated with Netflix. However, filmmakers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos are currently working on their own Netflix follow-up to Making A Murderer.
Convicting A Murderer is expected to be completed next year.
