Flashback to episode one, season four – during Luther’s (Idris Elba) self-imposed moody exile – viewers learn that Alice has suddenly died. Her body was apparently discovered after a drowning. Luther, unbelieving, demands to look at the evidence and is distraught to learn dental records confirm the death. However, as many fans point out, we never actually see Alice die on-screen.

Though some rumours and fan theories say Alice’s return is but a figment of Luther’s imagination, Wilson said otherwise.

“We find that Alice isn’t actually dead. Things have all gone a bit wrong, so she’s come back to get Luther’s help,” she told Digital Spy

Not that we don’t love their (twisted) partnership, but Luther has a lot on his plate.

As we see in the snippets BBC have released, Luther gets the shit beaten out of him by old mate George Cornelius (Patrick Malahide) who’s looking for his son. Not to mention the disturbing as hell serial killer Luther must catch.

As for Alice, fans can expect to see “a lot more to [her]” this season.

“She’s funnier than ever; she’s more lethal than ever and she and Luther get up to some dastardly things,” Wilson said.

Oh, good.

Meanwhile, Luther will be joined by new kid on the block, D.S. Catherine Halliday (Wunmi Mosaku).

Luther season five will premiere on BBC One, New Year’s Day.

hate the crawling killer so much.
