A representative of Disney‘s Lucasfilm subsidiary spoke to ABC News at the end of this week to quieten rumblings that the production company has put plans for Star Wars Story spinoff films on hold, after the poor box office performance and critical reception of their latest, Solo: A Star Wars Story.
The rep has called the claims made care of Collider “inaccurate“, instead assuring fans that they do indeed have “multiple” as yet unannounced Star Wars films in development.
Those films in development are believed to be going ahead as distinct from the already announced trilogy from The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, and another series helmed by Game of Thrones‘ producers David Benioff and DB Weiss.
The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams returns to the sequel trilogy for Star Wars: Episode IX, expected in theatres in December next year.
The conjecture circulating Thursday indicated that rumoured spinoff films about characters such as Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi believed to already be in pre-production may not move forward.
By regular standards, Solo didn’t actually perform so badly, earning $103 million in the US over its opening weekend – although that’s all relative to the massive success of its predecessors like 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which made $155 million. Still, the latter didn’t go up against blockbuster sequels Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2. So… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
