Yesterday, Deadline broke the news that an all-female reboot of Lord of the Flies was coming, and people were very confused.
The novel, written by William Golding in 1954 and later adapted into two different films, explores what happens when a bunch of young boys are stranded on an island and attempt to recreate society. Even if you never read it, you know what happens: it does not go well. Boys descend into violence, some of them die. It’s as much a commentary on the intrinsic evil of man as it is about toxic masculinity and how it replicates.
So yeah, people aren’t suuuuper convinced that a bunch of young girls marooned would fall into the same traps. It also doesn’t help that the adaptation is being written by two dudes, Scott McGhee and David Siegel, one of whom told Deadline:
“We want to do a very faithful but contemporised adaptation of the book, but our idea was to do it with all girls rather than boys. It is a timeless story that is especially relevant today, with the interpersonal conflicts and bullying, and the idea of children forming a society and replicating the behaviour they saw in grownups before they were marooned.”
Like we said, people are super confused.

the all-girl remake of lord of the flies wont work bc realistically the girls would set aside their differences & work to get off the island

Some people argued that an all-female Lord of the Flies narrative already exists:

And look. None of these are necessarily true, but you also can’t prove that they’re not not true.
The all-female Lord of the Flies movie will just be 2 hours of the girls enjoying not having their jokes mansplained to them.

Making an all-female Lord of the Flies makes about as much sense as making an all-male A League of Their Own.

The Lord of the Flies movie feels like a studio had a big jar of “Make with Chicks?” ideas & just picked the one that made the least sense.

Anyway. This is fine. It probably won’t end up a total disaster.
