Per The Hollywood Reporter Gao, who just won her first Emmy for Rick and Morty, will pen the single-cam comedy which has been given a script-plus-penalty commitment. In other words, Gao is getting paid whether or not a pilot is ordered.

The Rick and Morty team took home the win for most Outstanding Animated Program for the Pickle Rick ep at last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys Awards.

As for this new comedy series, it is still early days but we do have the gist of it: Janet Zhao is a first generation Chinese-American woman with a crazy and exhausting family.

When her wealthy grandmother dies and names Janet the sole inheritor, she suddenly finds herself the unwilling new matriarch of the family she’s spent her life trying to keep at arm’s length.

Yeah, gimme.

As well as writer, Gao will also serve as executive producer alongside Samie Kim Falvey who you may know for her work on Fresh Off The Boat, Black-ish, and Modern Family to name a few.

Already, there’s a just a tad bit of excitement for the telly series especially from Crazy Rich Asians director Jon. M Chu who tweeted:“Wow this is what movement looks like. I love seeing others get the opportunity to tell their stories!!! This is what we need! Let’s keep it going. #Movement”

Speaking of which, Crazy Rich Asians is now on an easy $138,686,767 United States domestic total as of September 11 according to Box Office Mojo

And on Monday, it was announced 19-year-old Katherine Ho‘s cover of Coldplay‘s Yellow’ had claimed the No. 1 spot on Spotify‘s global viral charts.

OH, and if you’re keen for A Crazy Rich Asians sequel, “it’s in development” as Chris Pang (Colin Khoo) in the film told PEDESTRIAN.TV and will be based on the second book in the series, China Rich Girlfriend by Kevin Kwan.

Crazy Rich Asians is in cinemas now.
