Kevin Kwan, the author behind the hugely successful Crazy Rich Asians, has a new TV project in the works, thanks to US network CBS, who have picked up the pilot for his new comedy The Emperor Of Malibu.
Per reports in Variety, the multi-camera series will be about a clash of families, “one from Shanghai with new money and one from the East coast of the U.S. with old money, that must learn to co-exist when their children get married.”
The series was co-created by Kwan, who is also set to executive produce. It has been given a put pilot commitment by the network, meaning that even if it doesn’t get picked up (unlikely, you’d think), they will need to air it or will be obliged to pay a financial penalty.
The Emperor Of Malibu is set to be Kevin Kwan’s second TV project – he and David Sangalli are also working on a drama series for Amazon, which is set to be about a powerful Hong Kong family and the business empire they control.
Meanwhile, Crazy Rich Asians director John M. Chu recently revealed that the sequel to the hit film is currently in the early stages of development, and that he and fellow producers are working out how to bet utilise everyone in the very talented cast.
Per the official plot description of the sequel, Kevin Kwan’s novel China Rich Girlfriend:
It’s the eve of Rachel Chu’s wedding, and she should be over the moon. She has a flawless Asscher-cut diamond, a wedding dress she loves, and a fiancé willing to thwart his meddling relatives and give up one of the biggest fortunes in Asia in order to marry her. Still, Rachel mourns the fact that her birth father, a man she never knew, won’t be there to walk her down the aisle.
Then a chance accident reveals his identity. Suddenly, Rachel is drawn into a dizzying world of Shanghai splendor, a world where people attend church in a penthouse, where exotic cars race down the boulevard, and where people aren’t just crazy rich … they’re China rich.
