Rumour Has It Imelda Staunton Will Star As Queen Liz In ‘The Crown’ After Olivia Colman

Imelda Staunton

Yes, yes, whispers are getting about that Imelda Staunton will replace Olivia Colman on The Crown in season 5 and 6, and Colman’s reign on the throne just kicked off for fans.

This all started after the Daily Mail published a yarn making the claim, which threw the entertainment industry into a raucous. Then all the blue ticks of Hollywood jumped on it, as did Twitter, and so on and so forth. It all became such a thing today that Netflix issued a statement that kind of, sort of, shat on the entire thing.

“We are currently filming season 4 of The Crown but have not commissioned any further seasons as yet, therefore any news on casting remains pure speculation,” Netflix said.

And speculation it will remain until the streaming giant officially confirms a fifth season. But still, it must have come from somewhere. Stay tuned.

Colman has replaced Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown season 3, which is available now on Netflix. It co-stars Gillian Anderson (The Fall) as Margaret Thatcher, Emerald Fennell (Call the Midwife) as Camilla Parker Bowls, Tobias Menzies as Prince PhillipHelena Bonham Carter as Princess MargaretJosh O’Connor as Prince Charles, Erin Doherty as Princess Anne, and Emma Corrin as Diana Spencer.

Also, Charles Dance stars as Lord Mountbatten because what is a period drama without Charles Dance? Not a good one, I tell you what.

Speculation aside, the idea of Imelda Staunton as Queen Lizzy absolutely floats my boat. She did star as [REDACTED] in the Downton Abbey movie, which I’m personally counting as an unofficial audition.

If you haven’t already, you can watch The Crown season 3 on Netflix now.
