Turns Out Hodor Wasn’t Into Ed Sheeran’s ‘Game of Thrones’ Cameo Either

The man who played beloved Game of Thrones character Hodor – whose death at the end of season six devastated fans everywhere – sometime-DJ Kristian Nairn, is just like you and me, in that he too was super unimpressed by Ed Sheeran‘s moon-shaped face popping up in the first episode of season seven.

Oh had you forgotten about Sheeran’s contentious cameo? He portrayed a Lannister soldier having a sing at the end of a long day, only for Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) to arrive: “It’s a pretty song, I’ve never heard it before,” and share a meal with Sheeran and his mates.

Apparently Williams is a massive Sheeran fan, as showrunner David Benioff explained at March 2017’s SXSW, ahead of the episode’s release: “For years we were trying to get Ed Sheeran on the show to surprise Maisie, and this year [2017] we finally did it.”

Anyway, The Huffington Post decided to ask Nairn about it this month, because why the heck not, I guess, and it turns out he really wasn’t a fan of it either:

I’m not a fan of the cameos in Game of Thrones. I don’t like them. I think it’s stupid. I don’t mind going on the record on that. I just think it takes you right out of the world.

Especially Ed Sheeran. I was like, ‘Why is Ed Sheeran here?’ I mean, Ed Sheeran’s great. He’s a great guy, great musician, but why is he in Game of Thrones?”

I’m not saying I’m not a fan of Ed Sheeran. I’m being tactful here, but just not a fan of the cameo. I think most people would agree with me there. It was a big snap to reality. It’s like, ‘What? What?’

Finally, a voice of reason.

After his widely unpopular, frankly baffling appearance on the show – and a proliferation of memes and cruel jokes at his expense – Sheeran left Twitter , although he’s denied that he pulled the plug on the social platform because of the world’s collective ire. He was planing on doing that anyway.

And while he enjoyed the experience, he recognises that he ain’t gonna be asked back to the series: “No one wants to see me come back,” he told MTV News in September ’17“I wanted to be a cameo in it, and I’ve done the cameo.”

Sheeran’s of course not the only muso to crop up in the fantasy dragon show, following appearances from Of Monsters and MenMastodon and Sigur Rós.

It’s okay though, Nairn likes Sigur Rós: “[Sigur Rós] kind of got away with it because they’re so quirky… They’re almost like Game of Thrones world in real life. They’re so elven and spiritual. I think that works, but apart from that – I mean, I understand why people want to be in it, but just no. Go away.
