Variety reports Cavill will take the lead on the upcoming eight-part series, where he will meet elves, ghouls, gargoyles, and all manner of nasty types on his quest to, well, slay heaps and heaps of monsters for the good of the realm.

Old mate himself announced the news via Instagram, too:

And the series’ executive producer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich had this to say about his appointment:

The Witcher, originally conceived by author Andrzej Sapkowski as a series of short stories, is perhaps best known for its massively popular video game adaptation.

CD Projekt Red‘s runaway success with those games suggests Netflix will be keen to pour its resources into the series, which seems tailor-made to counter the slew of Game Of Thrones spin-offs being prepared by HBO, along with the Lord Of The Rings series in development at Amazon Studios.

There’s no release date for this one yet, but we’ll keep you posted.
