At the Cheltenham literature festival, three words that straightened my posture, Bonham Carter said she read a slew of biographies, talked to Margaret’s relatives, friends, ladies-in-waiting, and consulted a psychic to properly research her. As you do.

Via The Guardian, Bonham Carter said Princess Margaret was apparently “glad” she had been chosen to star as the royal.

“So I asked her: ‘Are you okay with me playing you?’ and she said: ‘You’re better than the other actress’ … that they were thinking of. They will not admit who it was. It was me and somebody else.”

Well then.

“Then she said: ‘But you’re going to have to brush up and be more groomed and neater.’ Then she said: ‘Get the smoking right. I smoked in a very particular way. Remember that – this is a big note – the cigarette holder was as much a weapon for expression as it was for smoking.’”

Apparently Princess Margaret did/does not hold back.

Bonham Carter replaces Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret in The Crown season 3, which flashes forward to the years of and between 1964 and 1977.

Olivia Colman (The Favourite) takes over Claire Foy‘s role as Queen Elizabeth II, Gillian Anderson (The Fall) stars as Margaret Thatcher, Emerald Fennell (Call the Midwife) stars as Camilla Parker Bowls, and Emma Corrin stars as Diana Spencer.

The Crown hits Netflix November 17.

Incredible.
