HBO’s Docuseries On Golden State Killer Officially Begins Production

After the recent arrest of Joseph James DeAngelo, who is suspected to be the Golden State KillerHBO has given the green light for a docuseries to be produced, based on Michelle McNamara‘s bestseller, I’ll Be Gone In The Dark.

HBO acquired the rights to I’ll Be Gone In The Dark in early April, but has now prioritised the production, considering the cold case is now wide open again. The series is has the late author’s husband, Patton Oswalt, as executive producer, and is being directed by HBO’s Liz Garbus.

The book, which was launched back in late February, brought the cold case of the East Area Rapist/Original Night Stalker (EAR/ONS) back into the limelight, and Michelle coined the name ‘Golden State Killer’, after realising that EAR/ONS wasn’t catchy enough.

Michelle passed away in her sleep in 2016, when the book was about three-quarters complete. Paul Haynes, a researcher that assisted with the book’s production, and Billy Jensen, a close friend, picked up where Michelle left off and published the book in her honour.

The series will follow the book and Michelle’s passionate quest to find the Golden State Killer – who terrorised the state of California throughout the late 70s and early 80s, before lying dormant for near on 30 years.

There’s no firm date on when the docuseries will air, but we’ll keep you posted on that one.
