Hannah Gadsby’s New Show ‘Douglas’ To Be Turned Into A Netflix Special

Netflix officials have finally confirmed arguably one of the more poorly-kept secrets in Australian entertainment: Hannah Gadsby will be getting a follow-up Netflix special to the groundbreaking Nanette next year.

Gadsby’s new show Douglas, which had its official live premiere in Melbourne at this year’s Comedy Festival, will be filmed and released on Netflix at an undisclosed date in 2020 following the conclusion of the global tour Gadsby is currently embarking on with the show.

The announcement was made at the streaming giant’s Emmy For Your Consideration event in Los Angeles earlier today.

Gadsby made a short appearance and confirmed the new comedy special with a short statement extolling the virtues of committing an event otherwise accessible to a relative few onto film.

I’m so excited to announce today that Douglas will be released on Netflix in 2020. I’m really enjoying touring with the live performance, but there will be places in the world that I won’t be able to visit, so it’s wonderful that Netflix will bring the show to every corner of the globe.

The special is Gadbsy’s follow-up to Nanette, which was originally intended as the Tasmanian comedian’s performance swansong, but wound up shooting her into global prominence after becoming a cultural gamechanger.

There’s no word yet on where exactly the special will be filmed; Nanette was shot at the Sydney Opera House, but it remains to be seen whether the Douglas special will be shot there as well. However, Gadsby is scheduled to perform Douglas at the Opera House across five nights this coming December.

No definitely release date has been set at this time.
