Get This, Greta Gerwig Is Writing The ‘Barbie’ Film Script For Margot Robbie

Here’s a Hollywood development you probably wouldn’t have expected in your wildest dreams: The Margot Robbie-starring Barbie movie has found itself some writers. Some Oscar-nominated writers, would you believe. Some writers by the names of Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach. Believe it, it’s real.

The actual Gerwig and Baumbach – again, the beloved indie cinema darlings behind the likes of Lady Bird and The Squid & The Whale – have reportedly been tapped by distributing studio Warner Bros. to pen the script for the high-profile big screen outing for the iconic Mattel doll. More to that, it seems the production is eyeing off Gerwig as its choice of director. This isn’t some manic Hollywood fever dream. This is as real as it gets.

Robbie will star as the titular Barbie and is also producing the flick under her production house banner LuckyChap. The distribution rights to the upcoming film were secured by Warner in a deal with Mattel Films that was ticked off on back in January.

In the meantime, Gerwig is hard at work on her big screen adaptation of the iconic Little Women, which has Emma WatsonMeryl Streep, and Saorise Ronan in the cast, in a production that’s tipped to do big things come awards season this year.

Meanwhile Baumbach has an as-yet untitled Netflix film starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johannson scheduled to hit the streaming service later this year.

And after that they’ll all team up to write and direct Barbie.

Barbie, the real Hollywood movie. Starring Margot Robbie. Written by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach. Almost assuredly directed by Greta Gerwig as well.

What a time to be alive.
