The Netflix original is based on the life and work of ’70s Blaxploitation legend Rudy Ray Moore. After feeling the sting of showbiz, Rudy finds success in his wild cane-carrying / badass mothefucker alter ego Dolemite, the eventual titular character of the 1975 film.

The movie features a slew of big names like Wesley Snipes (who’ll also be starring in the Coming To America sequel), Keegan Michael Key, Mike Epps, Craig Robinson, Tituss Burgess, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Ron Cephas Jones. Oh, and Snoop Dog!

At the helm is Hustle & Flow director Craig Brewer, and Scott Alexander and Lazzy Karaszewski penned the script. Between those two names you have Ed Wood, Goosebumps, The People vs. Larry Flynt, and The People vs. O.J. Simpson.

Dolemite is My Name will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival later this year. It’ll land on Netflix sometime afterwards.

It’s been quite the year for Murphy, what with the announcement of a Coming to America sequel, a couple of ($$$) rumoured standup specials with Netflix, and his appearance on Jerry Seinfield‘s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

The Coming to America sequel was announced back in January, with Murphy saying in a statement that “after many years of anticipation, I’m thrilled that Coming to America 2 is officially moving forward.” The sequel will also be directed by Brewer.

As for that $$$ rumour, publications at the time reported that Netflix had more or less offered Murphy $70 million for a number of new standup specials. Murphy hasn’t done standup in years.

Classic Netflix.
