Christina Applegate Sought Therapy After Filming Netflix Dark Comedy ‘Dead To Me’

Spicy new Netflix series Dead To Me might be full of LOL-worthy gags but there’s no denying that the heavy subject matter is no joke, especially to lead star Christina Applegate.

Speaking to Variety, the actress and executive producer admitted that filming the dark comedy series took a massive toll on her, both physically and emotionally.

Applegate’s character mourns the loss of her husband

The physical toll was largely due to the fact that she was out of practice in the dancing realm.

“I was in traction for a week because I hadn’t danced in 10 years before that day. So it hurt,” she said.

“This old body? This 47- year-old body can’t do it anymore.”

And as for the emotional toll, Applegate said that the character’s grief became so overbearing for her that she sought counselling after filming wrapped.

“Jen, my character, is grieving in worst way possible, but that’s her way,” said Applegate. “And I think that we should all be allowed to do that when we need to. Grief doesn’t have a timeline. And grief is messy.”

She adds, “It tapped into some stuff that I had to face. It was cathartic. I don’t know if [it was] therapeutic. Did I start therapy after I shot the show? Yes, absolutely,” she said with a laugh. “To like finally talk about the stuff that hurt you in your life — and heal from that? I think it’s really beautiful thing.”
