Speaking with US Weekly, the director said that the follow-up is in its “very early stages”, adding: “We have an idea, and then we tear it down and start a new one … We have a deep bench of actors, and I would love to use them as much as possible this time.”

He also said that the cast has been busily texting him with ideas for even more movies. “They want to do spin-offs of the Goh family,” he said. “They want to do Astrid’s story. Everyone wants their own movie. You never know. Maybe this is the cinematic universe in its own, which would be amazing.”

Kevin Kwan’s novel China Rich Girlfriend, the sequel to his book Crazy Rich Asians, was released in 2015. Per the official plot description:

It’s the eve of Rachel Chu’s wedding, and she should be over the moon. She has a flawless Asscher-cut diamond, a wedding dress she loves, and a fiancé willing to thwart his meddling relatives and give up one of the biggest fortunes in Asia in order to marry her. Still, Rachel mourns the fact that her birth father, a man she never knew, won’t be there to walk her down the aisle.

Then a chance accident reveals his identity. Suddenly, Rachel is drawn into a dizzying world of Shanghai splendor, a world where people attend church in a penthouse, where exotic cars race down the boulevard, and where people aren’t just crazy rich … they’re China rich.

Crazy Rich Asians has so far made $US 193 million at the world-wide box office.
