TV in the early 2000s was an entirely different world, one where an entire series based on the premise “it’s prank phone calls but they’re being made by puppets one of whom we’re giving learning disabilities for a cheap laugh” could exist. That was Crank Yankers, folks. Your Dad probably thought it was hilarious.

Inexplicably, for reasons not even CERN will be able to determine, Crank Yankers is suddenly in-line for a revival thanks to an announcement today from Comedy Central.
The original show, which ran for five seasons from 2002 until 2007, was created by Jimmy Kimmel (back in his more chest-beating Man Show days) alongside co-conspirators Adam Carolla and Daniel Kellison. Those three are back on board to executive produce the new series, which has already been given a 20-episode series order by Comedy Central.
Because it’s not the mid-2000s anymore and we have all virtually outgrown the common landline, network bosses announcing the reboot today promised the show would be updated for the digital world, where “the world’s favourite profane puppets will be pranking on phones, social media, e-sport platforms and any venue where trouble can be made.” Which seems like an absolutely foolproof plan where nothing can possibly go wrong.
Kimmel, for his part, issued a statement accompanying today’s announcement, asserting that “Crank Yankers has always been my favorite show to make. Nothing is more fun or makes me laugh harder than a great crank call and I am thrilled that Comedy Central asked us to do it again. At this time, I would like to ask all Americans to disable their caller ID. Thank you.”
A show about prank calling puppets in the year of our lord 2019. All seems fine and normal to me.
