‘The Conjuring 3′ Adds Murder Trial To Good Ol’ Demonic Possession Plot

The Conjuring

Yes hello, there are 309 days until Halloween 2019 and to kick off that countdown we have some news about The Conjuring 3 from horror flick director James Wan.

This time around,Wan won’t be directing the third instalment but he will serve as producer. Taking his place will be Michael Chaves who impressed Wan when they teamed up on his directorial debut, The Curse of La Llorona, due to hit the big screen in 2019.

Chatting to who else but Bloody Disgusting,Wan revealed the third film won’t follow the same story arc as in the previous movies. In films one and two, Ed and Lorraine Warren come to the aid of families who claim someone or something has been possessed by a demon. To help, they usually stay with the family until they banish the horrifying demon back to the depths of hell and so on and so forth.

This time however, we’re headed to court.

“It’s not necessarily based on an artefact but it’s based on one of the Warren’s case files,” Wan explained. “It’s this guy who was on trial for committing a murder. I think it’s the first time in America’s history where the defendant used possessions as a reason, as an excuse.”

According to the ol’ Google, Ed and Lorraine Warren were involved in the infamous trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, the case otherwise known as Devil Made Me Do It Case.

A 1986 article by the Associated Press reports Johnson – 19 at the time – killed his landlord and was convicted of first-degree manslaughter. Johnson was sentenced to 10-to-20 years in prison but was released after five years because of his good behaviour.

Johnson claimed he had become possessed by a demon after getting involved and challenging the devil during an exorcism of a young boy.

In the 1986 article, the real Ed Warren told AP: “Arne understands what happened to him. He now knows if something happens how to ward it off and he won’t be stupid enough to take on the devil again.″

I 10/10 recommend reading the article, it’s a solid read at 11PM.

The Conjuring stars Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson are set to return.

In the meantime…

FUN FACT: The mum? Yeah, that’s Linda Cardellini AKA Velma from the 00s Scooby-Doo movies.

Wan is also behind that teeny-tiny film Aquaman, starring Jason Mamoa – you can catch it in cinemas now.
