Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn Movie Adds Director Cathy Yan In Hollywood First

Director Cathy Yan has been tapped to direct the DC Entertainment’s stand-alone Harley Quinn film, becoming the second female director after Wonder Woman‘s Patty Jenkins to be handed a piece of the legendary superhero saga – and the first Asian woman to helm a Hollywood superhero film.

Deadline reports Yan’s project won’t be directly linked to Suicide Squad, which saw Robbie bring the manic baddie to life. Instead, Yan will instead helm a project based on the Birds Of Prey comic series, which sees Harley Quinn teamed up with characters including Batgirl, Black Canary, and Huntress.

Late last year Robbie hinted at a project based on the Birds Of Prey storyline, telling MTV that Harley Quinn “needs her girlfriends” and “she loves meeting other people but she needs her girl gang.”

The film is expected to enter production late this year or in early 2019, after Robbie wraps up her work on Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood – his retelling of the grisly Manson Family murders of 1969.

Yan enters the DC Entertainment universe after directing critically acclaimed indie flick Dead Pigs. The script will be written by Christina Hodson, fresh off her work penning the Batgirl movie.
