Sometimes, the most familiar things are the most terrifying. Kristen Roupenian knows that, and her short story Cat Person dominated public discourse late last year thanks to its incisive look at malevolent and toxic masculinity.
Now, Roupenian has signed on for a new project to shake our psyches: she’s penning a new horror film for lauded studio A24.
The studio has touted Bodies, Bodies, Bodies as a “fresh, incisive perspective” on the genre, which will serve as a deep meditation on its characters without compromising that old-school sense of fear.
Just quietly, given the recent impact of Get Out, it makes sense studios would be willing to push for form forward with more cutting commentary.
The film is Roupenian’s first dip into screenwriting. No director nor cast members have been attached to the project just yet, but The Hollywood Reporter notes it’s been fast-tracked for production.
Bodies, Bodies, Bodies will enter the world after a string of smash successes for the studio, including Lady Bird, The Disaster Artist, The Florida Project, and Moonlight.
Late last year, Roupenian also sold a novel to UK publishing house in a deal reportedly worth $1.3 million. Not a bad few months, then.
