It’s been more than 20 years since 18-year-old Baltimore County high school student Hae Min Lee went missing in January 1999. Six weeks later, her classmate and ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, would be arrested for her murder. Syed, who has maintained his innocence, is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of Lee.

In 2014, the true crime podcast Serial reignited interest in the case, catapulting it into international headlines. The podcast had such a powerful impact, a US appeals court ordered a retrial for Syed, after concluding his lawyer had not properly defended him.

Director of the new HBO series Amy Berg promises “new information that questions the state’s case” including new audio recordings of Syed from prison, the defence team, the Syed family, private investigators, members of Baltimore City law enforcement, and Lee’s friends and teachers – all in an effort to examine how “Syed’s trial and subsequent conviction in 2000 raised as many questions as they answered.”

“This is an interesting case, but it’s people’s lives,” a woman says in the trailer.

Berg was previously nominated for an Academy Award for her 2007 documentary film, Deliver Us from Evil.

The Case Against Adnan Syed will premiere March 10 on HBO.
