Why Captain Marvel Is A Certified Badass Who Will Probably Ruin You

Captain Marvel

It’s odd that I have to explain why any of the Marvel superheroes are complete and total badasses (they all have superpowers and us normal people don’t, ‘nough said), but seeing as Captain Marvel is fresh to the MCU, it’s best that I give you the casual rundown.

You see, Captain Marvel (AKA Carol Danvers AKA actress Brie Larson) has been notoriously shrouded in mystery ever since it was announced there would be a standalone movie about the newest MCU powerhouse, so for the most part, we’ve had to go off tiny clues and lightning-fast trailers to piece it all together.

Now, the closer we get to the release date of Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel (out March 7th, in case you didn’t know), the more we’re learning about Larson’s Captain Marvel and frankly, we’re pretty bloomin’ impressed.

Here are just a coupla reason she already rocks (and this is before the flick even drops):

BRIE LARSON CAN MOVE A BLOODY JEEP

Okay just to clarify – Captain Marvel is Brie Larson, Brie Larson is Captain Marvel. They’re one and the same and no other actor is worthy of playing the most powerful (so I hear) Marvel character to date.

Good, glad I cleared that up. Now, swivel those peepers to the video below that Brie Larson uploaded to Twitter a short while back.

That’s Brie Larson. Pushing a Jeep. No wires, no special effects – nothing. Badass.

CAPTAIN MARVEL CAN FLY A BLOODY PLANE

Okay, so gathering from the trailer, Captain Marvel doesn’t recall her previous profession initially, but make no mistake – the superhero was indeed a former officer and test pilot.

Now, keep in mind the movie is set in 1995 when planes were a touch more daunting than they are now (I still can’t quite grasp how such heavy pieces of metal can just chill in the air), so the fact that Captain Marvel’s an accomplished pilot has brownie points written all over it. I mean, can you fly a plane? Exactly, take a seat.

THE FLICK WAS DIRECTED BY A MALE/FEMALE DUO

As Captain Marvel will be featured for the first time in her own movie, aptly titled Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel, it makes sense to have a group of equally badass men and women calling the shots behind the scenes.

Enter Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck: the pair who teamed up to both write and direct the feature film. Boden’s the first female director of a Marvel movie which of itself is pretty ‘uge, but it also means that there will be a voice behind the camera with a crystal clear understanding of Captain Marvel’s own journey.

There are also a tonne of women who were involved in getting Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel to the screens, and the movie was even inspired by Kelly Sue Deconnick‘s Captain Marvel comics. Cheers to moving onwards and upwards.

SHE DOESN’T DISCRIMINATE

Say what you want about Captain Marvel, she does not hold back when it comes to beating the living daylight out of people who deserve it (and only people who are balls-to-the-wall villainous).

Whether it’s men, women or aliens (usually aliens), Captain Marvel will put them in their place before you can say ‘don’t punch me in the face it bloody hurts’. We’re not fooling you – she’ll crack down hard on anyone who does her dirty. In the trailer alone we counted an elderly lady, a poor bridge and eight(ish) guards cop the knuckle treatment.

Like Captain Marvel, Brie Larson has also gone to great lengths to be inclusive – the actress has been vocal about engaging a diverse range of journalists throughout the films’ press tour.

CAPTAIN MARVEL WILL INSPIRE YOUNG GIRLS WORLDWIDE

Alright strap yourselves in and get ready for a very brief, very questionable Ted Talk.

Fact: Superhero movies have been predominantly male-driven. Nothing wrong with it, just pointing it out.
Fact: Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel is the first Marvel (whoa that’s a lot of Marvel’s in one sentence, apologies) film featuring a strong, badass woman as the lead.
Fact: Young girls across the globe will see Captain Marvel and will have the option to play make-believe as someone who they can wholly relate to.
Fact: That’s not to say young girls and boys can’t play make-believe as any superhero they admire, but it’s always nice to have options, you know?

At some point my facts trailed off into arguably correct opinions but regardless, thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Anywho, don’t let me sit here and lecture you about why Captain Marvel’s an absolute boss. Check her out when Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel drops in cinemas across Australia on March 7th.
