Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you’re gonna need to place your dreams for a Charlie’s Angels 3, reuniting the OG cast of Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu and Bill Murray, in the trash, because blonde ’90s/early ’00s rom com queen, Diaz has for real retired from acting.

Yes, while Barrymore feasts on human flesh, Liu panders to Jonny Lee Miller‘s Sherlock, and Murray becomes a beat poet, 45-year-old Diaz has retreated completely from the entertainment biz. Instead, she’s still running her elaborate wellness blog which she rarely actually writes for, Cameron Diaz’s The Body Book, and remains wedded to Good Charlotte‘s Benji Madden.

Her last acting role was in the 2014 Annie remake, as Miss Hannigan, but she of course rose to public attention at the age of 22 when she played Jim Carrey‘s love interest in The Mask, before going on to starring roles in There’s Something About Mary, Shrek, The Holiday and The Sweetest Thing.

Well it’s The Sweetest Thing that got Diaz talking publicly – albeit briefly – about her retirement. She and her Sweet co-stars, Christina Applegate and Selma Blair, spoke to Entertainment Weekly earlier this week and were asked if they ever hung out. The answer was a resounding ‘No, but I wish we did!’

In Diaz’s own words: “I’m down. I’m literally doing nothing.”

To which Applegate responded: “I’m literally doing nothing, too! I’m semi-retired, I haven’t worked for years. I’m a mom, that’s what we do. So I’m around, man.” (Applegate was last seen on screens in 2017 in Crash Pad, a movie I – and apparently even people who actually saw it – have never heard of).

Cue Diaz’s revelation: “That’s so awesome. I’m totally down. I’m semi-retired, too, and I am actually retired, so I would love to see you ladies.”

Later in the interview both Diaz and Applegate said they’d come out of retirement for a Sweetest Thing sequel, which is one little ray of good news for those of us who can’t imagine a movie world without Diaz’s big grin.

The mourning over Diaz’s lost acting career began earlier this month when Blair set rumour mills churning, telling Metro that Diaz had said over lunch, as they reminisced on their Sweet glory days that she was retired.

I would have liked to do a sequel but Cameron’s retired from acting. She’s like ‘I’m done.’

I mean, she doesn’t need to make any more films. She has a pretty great life, I don’t know what it would take to bring her back. She’s happy.

So Blair took to Twitter to set the record straight.

But as it turns out, the news is true, and a goddess has been lost from the acting world. Miss you every day, Cameron.
