Bust Out Ya Roxy Gear, Cos ‘Blue Crush’ Is Legit Being Rebooted For TV

Oh my god. They say you shouldn’t fuck with classics, but in this case we might make a teeny, tiny exception. Maybe. Like, we’re withholding judgement until we see the final thing, okay?

You ready for this? Iconic ’00s surfer film Blue Crush is being rebooted as a TV show.

Deadline broke the story, reporting that NBC has given a script commitment with penalty to a series based on the 2002 film. Essentially, that means it’s pretty much a cert, with the network contractually obligated to pay the studio bucketloads of money if it decides not to air it. This thing is happening.

The good news is that some of the original team is back on board for the reboot. Lizzy Weiss, who co-wrote the film with director John Stockwell, is writing and executive producing this one, while the film’s producer Brian Glazer is co-producing this one.

The film revolved around three best friends who also surfed, launching the careers of Kate Bosworth and Michelle Rodriguez.

But as we found out from Matthew Davis (a.k.a. Bosworth’s love interest in the film, as well as Warner Huntington III in Legally Blonde) last week, filming was not all a Hawaiian dream of blue waters and endless sunshine.

It was just a tough time,” he told us. “We started shooting right after 9/11, the people were really shaken up. I took some time off after that movie. It was a pretty traumatic experience on a lot of levels for a lot of people.

IDK about you, but Blue Crush just went straight to the top of my re-watch list.
