Bandersnatch has five main endings… not necessarily happy or satisfying ones, but an ending nonetheless. Choices in the movie vary from picking a type of cereal in the morning to, uh, killing… people…

Ahead of season five’s premiere on Netflix, Black Mirror‘s Brooker and executive producer Annabel Jones sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to chat about their future with the Choose-Your-Own-Adventure experience.

(In case you didn’t know, Black Mirror season five only has three episodes because Bandersnatch was originally supposed to be part of the season.)

Even though it took a hell of a lot of work – the script was 170 pages long – Brooker said he already has ideas for another project in an interactive form.

“While we were making it we kept saying, ‘We’ll never do this again.’ And then I guess, perhaps like childbirth, you block out the pain and approach it a second time!” he said. “By the end I was saying, ‘Oh I’ve got an idea.’ It’s definitely something I would do again and I think there are lots of ways to tackle it. The biggest challenge is narratively. It would have to justify being interactive otherwise, why put yourself through that?”

Jones added it was encouraging to see a heap of viewers give the movie a proper go.

“When people came to Bandersnatch, nearly everyone stayed with it,” she said. “There was not a sharp switch off when people saw the first choice point come up and that’s really interesting for the future of this form.”
