Billionaire Boys Club, starring disgraced actor Kevin Spacey, earned $126 on its opening day – not thousands or millions, just $126.
The film, which co-stars Emma Roberts, Ansel Elgort, and Taron Egerton, is based on the true story of a group of wealthy young men in the 80s who come up with one of those quick-rich scams that leads to not so great things.
The film quietly opened in select cinemas in the United States on Friday.
In the US, an average cinema ticket is apparently around nine to ten bucks… so if these Box Office results aren’t lying, maybe 12 people went to go see the film.
Yikes.
The Hollywood Reporter reckons the film will even struggle to break the 1,000 dollar mark which would make it the worst performing film in Spacey’s career.
Back in July, the film’s distributors Vertical Entertainment announced Billionaire Boys Club would receive a limited release.
In a statement defending their choice, the distributors said that because Spacey plays a supporting role in the film, “the rest of the cast shouldn’t be penalised” as per THR.
In October 2017, Spacey was accused of sexual assault by Star Trek: Discovery actor Anthony Rapp. In an interview with BuzzFeed News, Rapp alleges that in 1986 Spacey made sexual advances toward him when he was 14-years-old. Since, more than 20 people from both the US and UK have come forward with allegations against the 59-year-old.
Following these allegations, Netflix removed him from the series he fronted, House of Cards. Spacey’s publicist and talent agency ended their business relationships with him as well.
All The Money In The World, which initially starred Spacey, was re-filmed to have Christopher Plummer take his place on direction of Ridley Scott.
Billionaire Boys Club currently holds a 13 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes from eight critic reviews – one fresh, seven rotten. The audience score sits at 38 per cent.
