The other day my mum asked me: “What movie can I watch that’s like the end of the world-themed?” At first I was like “Whoa mum, bleak much?” but then when I thought about it, I realised the post-apocalyptic genre absolutely slaps. I think we’re all equally horrified and fascinated by the idea of the world as we know it coming to an end, and how we’d manage to survive in a landscape very different to the one we’re used to.
That’s why this week’s instalment of PEDESTRIAN.TV‘s Big Flick Energy is putting two survivalist movies head-to-head: Will Smith‘s 2007 classic I Am Legend and the 2015 Charlize Theron masterpiece Mad Max: Fury Road.
Firstly, what’s Big Flick Energy, you ask? Well, over the past few weeks, we’ve been putting two banger movies head-to-head and getting you, dear reader, to tell us your favourite. The winner gets screened on 9Go! the following Wednesday night at 9pm, so you can kick back and enjoy the (far superior) flick from the comfort of your own couch.
So which one are you going to choose? It’s a tough pick, tbh. On one hand you’ve got Big Willie Style starring as Army virologist Robert Neville, who is left as the last living human in New York City after a virus (which he is immune to) wipes out most of the human population. Kept company by his dog Sam, he works to find a cure while he tries to avoid being killed by the weird vampire mutants called Darkseekers.
The other flick is Mad Max: Fury Road, the reboot of classic film Mad Max in which the world has become a barren wasteland. It stars Theron as one-armed badass Imperator Furiosa who is a lieutenant for a tyrannical leader called Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne) and decides to take five of his slave wives and escape — with the help of one of Joe’s prisoners, Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy).
