Benedict Cumberbatch Has A Crack At “Pathetic” Co-Star Martin Freeman

There have long been rumours of tension between Sherlock co-stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, and now Cumberbatch has upped the ante in a big way, slamming Freeman for his “pathetic” comments on the return of the show.

Freeman plays Watson on the BBC series, and in an interview in March, he said that, despite big pressure to come back and do a fifth season of the show, he is reluctant to return, because the weight of fan expectations has killed it for him.

“Being in that show, it is a mini-Beatles thing,” he told an interviewer at the time. “It’s not a thing to be enjoyed. It’s a thing of: ‘You better fucking do this, otherwise, you’re a cunt.’ That’s not fun anymore.” Strong words, indeed, but probably not inaccurate.

This week, Benedict Cumberbatch returned serve in an interview with the UK Telegraph. “It’s pretty pathetic if that’s all it takes to let you not want to take a grip of your reality,” he told the publication. “What, because of expectations? I don’t know. I don’t necessarily agree with that.”

Andrew Scott, who plays Moriarty on the show, recently said that there will probably not be any new episodes for a long time, so after this, you probably don’t want to hold your breath.

Both Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have found success in Hollywood, with the former starring in Marvel‘s Doctor Strange and the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War, and the latter starring in the Hobbit trilogy and Marvel’s recent Black Panther
