The necessary preamble to this is that, obviously, all words are made up. The English language wasn’t designed by committee, with an exhaustive and definitive list of of the words and their meanings and pronunciations written up after a few meetings by a collection of austere, Benjamin Franklin-looking motherfuckers. Words arrived here by a process of evolution, with new words living or dying as they entered or didn’t enter popular usage. Maybe in 500 years all of us will be saying “ingenuine”. But then, on the other hand, maybe everything on this planet will be dead except cockroaches and algae. Hard to say!

In saying that, the public consensus definitely seems to be that “ingenuine” is very much not a word, no matter how many times Jamie tried to hammer into the English language. Disingenuous? Absolutely. Delightful word. One of the great words, even. Ungenuine? Hideous word, but sure. Ingenuine? It’s a word according to Wiktionary and Jamie, but no one else.
