The Third Season Of ‘Atlanta’ Won’t Be Hitting Screens Until At Least 2020

Bad news for any of you holding out hope that Atlanta season three will be arriving any time soon: It won’t be.

While previous reports suggested the critically acclaimed Donald Glover series would be returning at some point in 2019, FX bosses are now asserting we won’t be seeing new episodes until 2020 at the absolute earliest.

At the recent Television Critics Association winter press tour, FX network officials confirmed Atlanta would not be returning “for this Emmy’s cycle,” meaning it’ll be early 2020 at the absolute earliest before the show returns to screens.

FX chief John Landgraf explained the delay was due to a raft of reasons, chiefly surrounding Donald Glover’s schedule and personal life, with Landgraf explaining Glover was dealing with some as-yet-undisclosed issues regarding his extended family.

As you might imagine, Donald Glover is sort of the king of all media, and he just has had an incredibly complicated life. He’s had personal things he’s had to deal with, from injuries to other things I’d rather not say publicly that just have to do not with his personal life but his extended family.

During a stop on Childish Gambino‘s This Is America tour in mid December, Glover revealed his father, Donald Glover Sr, had passed away. Glover had also spent portions of late 2018 dealing with an ankle/foot injury that prevented him from embarking on a planned tour of Australia, which included a stop at the Sydney Opera House.

Landgraf also stated that they’re not forcing the issue in regards to production on the series – writers are currently back at work piecing together the third season – and that the network would much rather wait and get it right than force out something of lower quality.

I think one of the things that is just a reality of television today is you have to wait. We have so many things now that don’t cycle back on a regular basis.

From my standpoint, I wish for the fans as well as for us that we could get everything back on an annual basis but, again, you just have to make a decision about quantity over quality at a certain point, and we’re just erring on the side of quality.

Glover has dates booked as Childish Gambino right through to June at the Bonnaroo festival in Tennessee, so it’s unclear whether or not shooting on a third season will begin prior to that.
