The series explores the murder of legendary designer Gianni Versace by spree killer Andrew Cunanan, based on Maureen Orth‘s book Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U.S. History.

The show follows the book closely but tells the story in reverse chronological order. It begins with Cunanan shooting Versace on the front steps of his Miami Beach home on July 15, 1997 and from there, the show works its way backward.

It boasts an A+, not to mention hot as furck, cast including Édgar Ramírez, Darren Criss, Ricky Martin, and Penélope Cruz.

Ricky Martin as Antonio D’Amico and Edgar Ramirez as Gianni Versace

Penelope Cruz as Donatella Versace

After being cast in the true crime anthology, Criss told PEOPLE, “I had a friend tell me when I got the part, ‘You’re playing the gay boogeyman.’ ”

“This was the first time I was in a position of any type of leadership on a show,” he added. “For this particular project, it was a relief to be able to set the tone. When you have so much great material and you have a crew that’s working long days and everybody is away from their families and you’re repeating very gruesome things over and over again, it’s nice to know that I’m in the position to crack a few jokes and keep people light-hearted and help them disassociate from all the darkness that we were in.”

The season received positive reviews from critics, with praise for most of the performances. At the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards, it received the most nominations with nine, and won three awards, including Outstanding Limited Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for Criss.

Catch all nine eps on Netflix in April.
