Aquaman, with all its silly-silly-silly one-liners, is officially the highest-grossing DC Comics movie ever – dethroning Christopher Nolan‘s 2012 epic The Dark Knight Rises.
According to Box Office Mojo, Aquaman has netted a cool $1.090 billion at the worldwide box office, surpassing The Dark Knight Rises at $1.084 billion. As Deadline points out, Aquaman hasn’t even released in Japan yet so expect a whole lot more $$$.
For a bit of perspective, the 2017 movie Justice League – which chucked Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Flash, Cyborg, and Aquaman in the same team, made $658 million at the global box office. Aquaman out-earned Justice League in its second weekend.
Yeah, bloody hell.
Over this past weekend it was announced Warner Bros. were already in talks with director James Wan for a sequel. However Wan, who also has the Conjuring franchise to his name, isn’t 100 per cent on-board yet. The director will oversee the development of the sequel, which includes selecting the writers, before he makes up his mind. But ultimately, he’ll only sign on if the script is extraordinary.
“For years Aquaman has been an orange-shirted punchline… No one is laughing anymore. And this weekend when the King of Atlantis surpasses the Dark Knight of Gotham City, orange will officially be the new black for Warner Bros.”— James Wan (@creepypuppet) January 26, 2019

Aquaman stars Jason Momoa in the lead role of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry, the reluctant heir to underwater kingdom Atlantis. With the surface world and Atlantis on the brink of war, Arthur must confront who he really is in order to bring peace to his worlds.
Amber Heard costars as Mera, Aquaman’s fierce warrior ally; William Dafoe as Vulko, council to the Atlantean throne; The Conjuring’s Patrick Wilson stars as the King of Atlantis; big dude Dolph Lundgren as Nereus; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta; and Nicole Kidman as Arthur’s mama Atlanna. Julie Andrews also has a small part in the film, voicing that ginormous beast Karathen.
Aquaman is in cinemas now.
