‘Aquaman’ Cracks $1 Billion At Global Box Office, Topping ‘The Dark Knight’

Beloved superhero flick Aquaman just officially crossed a massive box office milestone, joining the elite $1 billion box office club just over a month after its initial release.

The movie based on the fishy comic-book character has become the 37th movie in history to make more than $1 billion at the global box office and is currently the only flick from the DC Extended Universe to ever crack a billion.

Interestingly, the majority of money earned from the film came from audiences outside the United States, particularly China where it’s racked up about $300 million, making it the second-biggest international title in Warner Bros.’ history.

While it’s the only flick from the DCEU to make $1 billion, it’s not the first movie based on DC comics to hit the milestone as Christopher Nolan‘s iconic Batman flicks The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises both exceeded $1 billion in global ticket sales. Aquaman currently falls between the two, with $1.02 billion in total.

This puts esteemed Aussie director James Wan in the big leagues alongside Nolan, Michael Bay, Peter Jackson and James Cameron.

Aquaman is the fifth movie released in 2018 to cross $1 billion, following Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Incredibles 2.

A sequel has yet to be announced, presumably due to behind the scenes negotiations, but it’s safe to say that just like the big blue sea, there’s much more to be explored here.
