Hollywood loves to give itself a big old pat on the back with the Academy Awards, so the Golden Raspberries, aka the Razzie Awards, are traditionally handed out the day before, as an annual reminder that the film industry also churns out a whole lot of ignominious crap.
The 38th annual Razzie Awards were announced overnight in Los Angeles, and the cash-in kids’ flick The Emoji Movie was the big winner, taking home Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay and Worst Screen Combo (for “any two obnixious emojis”).
Fifty Shades Darker was nominated across a massive eight categories (an impressive achievement, really), and took home two awards – Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off Or Sequel, as well as as Worst Supporting Actress for Kim Basinger‘s performance.
Tom Cruise picked up Worst Actor for The Mummy, while Mel Gibson took Worst Supporting Actor for Daddy’s Home 2. Tyler Perry beat an impressive field, including Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Watson, to win Worst Actress for Boo 2! A Madea Halloween.
The Barry L Bumstead award, recognising “a critical and financial failure that would’ve been nominated if it had received an eligible release”, went to CHiPs.
The Razzie Redeemer award, meanwhile, was given to “a Safe Hollywood-Haven where talent is protected, nourished and allowed to flourish with proper compensation.”
