Zooey Deschanel Doesn’t Care For ‘New Girl’s New Credits

Back in the day, episodes of New Girl opened with a song and dance routine that was twee as hell, just a bit irritating, and very difficult to shake off – much like Jess, the character portrayed by Zooey Deschanel. As TV opening themes go, it was pretty much the perfect summation of the show.
Late last year, at the beginning of its fourth season, New Girl abruptly swapped the familiar title sequence out for a generic, elevator muzak version of the theme song and a series of still photos. It might seem like a small change, but fans were taken by surprise, and cracked the shits in a very big way.
The show had to do something, given the return of Damon Wayans Jr‘s Coach character following the demise of Happy Endings, and the promotion of the excellent Hannah Simone to full time cast member status. Nonetheless, when Hitfix interviewed Zooey Deschanel recently, the topic of the new credits came up, and she doesn’t appear to be a fan.
While they were pretty persistent in their line of questioning to get an answer out of Deschanel, and she was pretty diplomatic in her response (it’s not like she’s going to go out of her way to bite the hand that feeds her), it seems like she feels the same way about the new opening as you do:
Finally talk a bit about the new credits. What are your thoughts on seeing them?
I had no choice. Yeah, it wasn’t my choice and I had no real influence in the matter.

But what was your reaction when you saw them for the first time?

It’s different.

Do you view them as being sort of like long-term or would you ideally like to have season five a whole new thing?

I don’t really have an opinion on it. I like the original ones personally but that’s just me.

I just feel like a lot of people miss the original ones.

Yeah. I like them too. I mean that’s my personal opinion and a lot of people have kind of complained to me on Twitter and stuff. But it was mandated by not me.

That’s what Twitter is there for to give people a chance to complain.

Exactly. No, someone wanted it for some, and I’m sure it was a good one, reason and I don’t know why. But anyway I like the original.

For the sake of comparison, here are the original opening credits:
And here is the new version:
The new one’s not totally appalling or anything, but when a TV show you love has a highly distinctive theme song, like the opening credits of Cheers or Friends, you’re obviously going to want to hang on to that.
Hell, it’s always crushingly disappointing to watch later seasons of Dawson’s Creek and hear Jann Arden‘s ‘Run Like Mad’ playing over the credits instead of Paula Cole‘s rightful ‘I Don’t Want To Wait’:
In short, we sympathise.
