YouTube Unveils Paid TV Channels

On Thursday, YouTube unearthed 53 paid subscription channels, placing them in a new realm of competition with Netflix, Amazon and Hulu. The Google-owned video service said this in a statement on their blog: “Starting today, we’re launching a pilot program for a small group of partners that will offer paid channels on YouTube with subscription fees starting at $0.99 per month”.

Ok, G$$gle.
Niche channels like Gay Direct (the best in LGBT drama, comedy, variety, entertainment and feature film programming), Treehouse Direct (housing legendary elephant, Babar) and Rap Battle Network, for ‘the realest from the battle rap culture across the globe’ all seem v. interesting.

The highest subscription rate is $7.99 per month, with the bulk of channels being between $2.99 and $3.99. 14 Day free trials and discounts on yearly subscriptions are offered. Here’s a taste of what’s on offer, or peruse all the channels here.
