The mammoth Niki Caro-directed flick follows Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter who volunteers to join the Imperial Chinese Army in place of her debilitated father.
As the Emperor of China specifically asked for males only, Hua Mulan must disguise herself in order to be accepted, and, to put it plainly, it’s a hard slog.
Oddly enough though, it’s one of those tales that kind of make you wish you were also having a rough time and were forced to join a full-blown army under the guise of someone else – the premise of Mulan consumed my make-believe games for a solid year when I was younger.
