At this time every year, the major U.S. broadcast networks – ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and the CW – get the big red pen out and start thinking about which TV shows will live on, and which will get a line through them.
Fans of the ever-popular Modern Family will be relieved to learn that it has been renewed for a ninth and tenth season, so at this rate, we’ll get to follow the plucky Dunphy-Tucker-Pritchett clan well into their geriatric years.
The Big Bang Theory has also been granted for two more seasons, and just because they hate you, CBS are working on a show called Young Sheldon, which will be about a nine-year-old Sheldon Cooper going to school in Texas.
A number of your comedy faves, including Bob’s Burgers, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Fresh Off The Boat, Jane The Virgin and The Last Man On Earth, have been renewed, so you can breathe easy on those.
Scandal is getting one more season, but will officially bow out after that, while How To Get Away With Murder is safe and has been renewed for at least another year to come.
Riverdale is also coming back, so there’s enough lush, stylised, teen angst-infused murder and mayhem for everyone.
Not so lucky is 2 Broke Girls – while still a solid ratings performer, the show had evidently became too expensive for CBS to justify, meaning that the central plot, about two waitresses saving to open a business, will remain unresolved.
A number of shows are still on the bubble, and the fate of the beloved New Girl remains unclear – the writers behind the show seemed aware of this, so unlike 2 Broke Girls, its recent season finale also works as a series wrap-up, should it get the chop.
The fate of Scream Queens is also uncertain – the Ryan Murphy horror-comedy series has not drawn in spectacular numbers of viewers, but the last word from Fox is that it’s still “under consideration.”
