As far as we can tell, The Romantics tells the tale of a seven-part college clique reuniting for the wedding of two members of the crew. In the tradition of films about old friends reuniting for a big event – akin to The Big Chill and St Elmo’s Fire – this movie ticks all the boxes for flirty but lamentable rom-com fodder. Laura, maid of honor to Lila, watches on as her golden girl best friend weds Tom, her ex-boyfriend of 4 years. Laura is still sprung on Tom, pensive dialogue ensues.
Director Galt Neiderhoffer (who wrote the novel on which the screenplay is based) has an amazing cast of primetime tv alumnae to fill out the incestuous group of ‘romantics’: Katie Holmes, Candice Bergen, Adam Brody, Anna Paquin and Josh Duhamel – as well as Elijah Wood (although i don’t care what they say, he’ll always be Frodo to me).
Despite uninspired reviews aprés Sundance Film Festival where it previewed, I’m pretty excited to see catch this on the reel if it’s anything like the Dawson’s Creek meets The OC meets Las Vegas meets Tolkien’s The Shire it alludes to being.
