WATCH: The Hellish New ‘Blade Runner’ Trailer Might Reveal Something Big

Hell yeah. After the first trailer gave us a bit of a taste of its gritty new cyberpunk vision, the new Blade Runner 2049 trailer throws open the gates and shows us just what director Denis Villeneuve has in mind for his sequel to the sci-fi classic.

Opening with a shot of a graveyard of solar panels and featuring a whole lot of dead orange desert, one could be forgiven for thinking this nightmare vision of the near future might have some commentary in it. Surely not!
There’s also more of a look at Jared Leto‘s character, who is something of a spiritual successor to corporate overlord Eldon Tyrell from the original.
The big thing that’s got everyone talking – and spoiler alert, for those perhaps not as immersed in the world of Blade Runner as the average punter – is one line from Harrison Ford in the trailer.
He says “we were being hunted,” which people are arguing endlessly over already. It might suggest that his character Rick Deckard is a replicant – something which fans have argued over since the original was released back in 1982. Of course, it could also be a red herring to make you think that. And to make me write it, which I now have. Goddamn.
(For what its worth, I reckon it’s not the case – Deckard could be referring to literally anything that transpired between the timeline of the original film and 2049. Fun to think about though.)
Here’s the official synopsis, in case you’re trying to piece all of this together:
Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.
Blade Runner 2049 hits theatres on October 5. We’re keen.
