WATCH: Samuel Johnson’s Gold Logie Win Was Hijacked By Molly Himself

Samuel Johnson collected a Gold Logie at last night’s award ceremony for his portrayal of Molly Meldrum, one of Australian telly’s most enduring larrikins. In all honesty, it was a surprising win in a field which included last year’s winner Waleed Aly and colleague Pete Helliar, Jessica Marais, Grant Denyer and Rodger Corser. Not surprising: the fact Molly himself would hijack Johnson’s speech.

A self-deprecating but ultimately thankful speech from Johnson gave way to input from the Akubra’d bloke, who launched into a roundabout monologue on Johnson’s involvement in the project. That involvement, somehow, involved Johnson’s presence in topless scenes during The Secret Life Of Us.

It wasn’t all throwbacks, though, as Molly presented the actor with a gold Akubra to match his new statuette. In one of the sweetest moments of the (massively long) evening, Molly said “I know it’s very hard to play an old drama queen like myself, and you did a great job, right.

“So on behalf of the drama queen of Australia, I would like to crown you also with my gold hat.”
