The Lonely Island guys haven’t made a film since 2007’s Hot Rod, but they’re back with a massive mockumentary parody of stardom in 2016 with Popstar: Never Stop Stopping, a pretty obvious parody ofJustin Bieber’s own documentary efforts.
It looks pretty good. Featuring cameos from DJ Khaled, Usher, Adam Levine (as a hologram) and Simon Cowell, it seems like a pretty on point parody of the archetypical BAD BOI popstar in 2016. He plays singer/rapper sensation Conner 4 Real, and the focus is on the insane number of people you need to manufacture stardom these days.
It’s produced by Judd Apatow and directed by fellow Lonely Islanders Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone. It also stars Sarah Silverman as Conner’s publicist – who says that she wants Conner to be everywhere, “like oxygen, gravity or clinical depression.”
Popstar hits cinemas in June.
