One of the great perils of doing reactive, reflexive TV comedy is that you will inevitably make a terrible joke that will come horribly true. That’s just the nature of the beast, and you’re going to have to come to terms with it sooner or later.
John Oliver, the only man who rivals Waleed Aly in the NAILED IT! stakes, was so very like the rest of the liberal entertainment establishment over the past 4 years in thinking it would be hella funny if Donald Trump ran for president. Well, Trump did end up doing that – which you might have seen on the news once or twice – and even though it’s looking like he won’t win, he’s certainly come within scraping distance of the office.
Oliver showed a clip of himself guest hosting The Daily Show three years ago in which he urged Trump to run for shits and gigs:
“Do it,” Oliver said to Trump in the clip. “I will personally write you a campaign check now on behalf of this country, which does not want you to be president, but which badly wants you to run.”
Obviously this doesn’t look quite so good in retrospect. “Now, in my defence, I have no defence for that and was hoping to think of one before finishing this sentence, which oh shit it’s over,” he said.
Let’s hope he isn’t too thoroughly chastened by, say, a Trump victory tomorrow.
