WATCH: J.J. Abrams Hits Us With Trailer For Surprise ‘Cloverfield’ Sequel

Overnight, J.J. Abrams sent film fans and the internet in general into a mild state of frenzy by releasing a trailer for a brand new and previously unheard-of follow-up to his 2008 monster movie Cloverfield.

10 Cloverfield Lane, directed by Dan Trachtenberg and produced by Abrams, went by a number of other names while it was in production, including Valencia and The Cellar, presumably to throw people off the scent.
Up until now, the film has only been described as a thriller in which a woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) wakes up in the basement of a mysterious man (John Goodman), and is told that it’s not safe to leave.
When the trailer launched under its actual title, Abrams made a statement, saying:

“The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.”

The meaning of “blood relative” is anyone’s guess, but it’s probably save to assume that the monsters who arrived on Earth in Cloverfield are wondering around outside, tearing shit up and ‘splodin people, in this current scenario.

Winstead previously said of her mysterious new movie:

“You’re really just on the ride with my character, in terms of who she can trust in the scenario and if she’s safer with him or safer escaping and battling whatever war is happening or not happening outside. So it’s a pretty interesting one.”
Check out the trailer below:

10 Cloverfield Lane is out in March.
