Watch: Facebook Movie Trailer

It’s amazing how much dramatic tension can be teased from just one minute of melodramatic dialogue, sinister sans serif titles and ominous music. Such is the case for this sparse first trailer for David Fincher’s forthcoming The Social Network, a dramatic take on the founding of social media juggernaut Facebook (you may have heard of it), which somehow turns the founding of the internet’s most “liked” medium for Mothers to embarrass their children into some kind of political/environmental scandal revolving around an evil genius named Mark.

Who, according to the trailer’s titles, is also a Punk, Genius, Prophet, Traitor and Billionaire as strategically placed string flourishes punctuate each new descriptor and Jesse Eisenberg’s (Adventureland, The Squid and the Whale, Zombieland) frantic and self-assured young Zuckerberg spouts lines like “We don’t know what it can be, we don’t know what it will be. We know that it is cool“. It’s almost like Biggie’s Mo money Mo Problems mantra but instead of rappers on the rise it’s privileged white billionaires dealing with the burden of making shitloads of money. Poor Zucks. Poor filthy rich Zucks.
