WATCH: Eddie Murphy Returns To Film In The Emotional ‘Mr. Church’ Trailer

Eddie Murphy is a pretty enigmatic character in the history of American film.
Following on from an early career that’s largely unparalleled both in terms of comedic quality, performance, and reverence as well as critical and financial success, his latter years stagnated shockingly.
In fact it’s been about 4 years since Murphy last appeared in a feature film, 2012’s entirely forgettable ‘A Thousand Words.’
Most of this is due to Murphy’s express desire to never make “anything else that sucks ever again,” as he told Ellen in 2013. But there’s a small part of Murphy, and a remarkable part at that, that simply doesn’t need the laughs anymore. Which isn’t a bad thing at all; if anything it kinda adds to his aura. Norm Macdonald explained it far better than anyone else ever could in his riveting account of Eddie’s involvement in the ‘SNL‘ 40th anniversary special last year.
So now, 4-years since his last film, Eddie is back in the decidedly un-comedic ‘Mr. Church,’ which dropped its first trailer earlier today.
The film sees Eddie as a kind of non-magical magical negro of sorts; a cook to a young girl (Britt Robertson) with an ailing mother (Natascha McElhone).
Despite the well-trod in literary character, the trailer shows at least a little promise for the film, which was directed by ‘Driving Miss Daisy‘ and ‘Breaker Morant‘ Aussie filmmaker Bruce Beresford, and is scheduled for release from September 16th.

I mean, there’s obviously enough in it to be sceptical about. But greying Eddie looking playing Pop to an adopted granddaughter? God damn it, you got me.
