Fastest man in the world and future internet meme candidate Usain Bolt appeared at his first Commonwealth Games press conference in Glasgow overnight, and boy, it was really something.
At first, journalists stuck to questions about sport, but realising that running doesn’t sell a lot of papers, they began asking him for his views on various controversial political topics, presumably hoping he’d embarrass himself and they’d get something headline-worthy out of it.
Hilariously, though, Bolt refused to take the bait, responding with a series of increasingly baffled and frustrated expressions as the 500-strong media horde quizzed him on such topics as the middle east conflict and Scottish politics.
One very serious British-accented journalist asked for Bolt’s opinion on the situation in Israel and Gaza right now, in light of the Commonwealth Games’ status as a friendly games and its support of human rights, to which he made this classic face:
Bolt replied that, as he has not followed the news in depth, it would probably be unwise for him to offer any views on the ongoing crisis, thus depriving the news cycle a round of “You Won’t BELIEVE What This Athlete Just Said About Israel” headlines.
Another dude stammered out a half-arsed question about soccer. “The World Cup just finished, eh … who was your … what team did you support?” Once again, Bolt stonewalled:
Yeah, nice try, dude. Finally, some lady asked the question of the day. “[I wanted to] see what your opinion is of the independence referendum that’s coming up here in Scotland in a couple of months time, have you got any thoughts?”
Bolt laughed the question off and said he had no idea. He left shortly after, probably very glad that the whole thing was over.
