Unhelpful New Self-Help Book Explains why Smart, Confident Women are Single

You may have detected the sound of a mass face-palming on the tram or in a coffee shop earlier today – if so, you were likely hearing people respond to a piece in today’s Sydney Morning Herald, explaining how and why smart, successful women are cursed to forever be unlucky in love.

The piece was based on a new self help book called The Alpha Woman Meets Her Match: How Today’s Strong Women Can Find Love and Happiness Without Settling. The book is by a therapist named Dr Sonya Rhodes, who comes from New York, so you know she’s totally legit.

In it, Rhodes argues that all of the “self-confident, accomplished, sexual” women she has seen in her practice over the past decade are missing a key component in their lives – all are “unhappy and frustrated by their lack of success in relationships.” Rhodes’ advice, perhaps somewhat contrary to the title of the book, is to settle, and settle hard.

Citing the example of magical fairy princess Gwyneth Paltrow and musical fart-sniffer Chris Martin as a couple whose relationship didn’t work out because they clashed due to competition for dominance, Rhodes advised Alpha women that they only way to be happy is to seek out their compliant Beta males as partners.

The crux of the argument is that, if women want to be happy, instead of looking for an Alpha male as successful as themselves, they should seek out their “dependable, responsible, and supportive” Beta opposite. Basically, your only option for being happy is to seek out the door mat-iest dude you can find and hope for the best. Just like Miranda and Steve!
So there you have it – Alpha females dating Beta males is officially a trend now. Single people, prepare to have some variation of these broad, unhelpful generalisations vomited on you by lifestyle blogs for the next 12-18 months, until another new pop psychology hack comes along and debunks them with an asinine new theory.
