Unfairly Good Thespian Daniel Day-Lewis Says He’s Quitting Acting For Good

Well, this sucks. Daniel Day-Lewis, widely considered to be one of the greatest actors working today, has announced that he’s quitting the game for good.

There’s one more film loaded in the chamber – the Paul Thomas Anderson flick Phantom Thread, but after that one he say’s he’s done. A statement from his spokesperson confirmed as much:

Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.

It’s not like Day-Lewis was particularly prolific to begin with, mind you. He’s known as one of Hollywood‘s most selective actors, having starred in only six films since 1998. And all of his performances are basically incredible.

It’s also not the first time he’s taken leave from the world of acting. After The Boxer in 1998, he literally vanished from the world’s stage and became an apprentice shoemaker in Florence, Italy, returning five years later for Gangs of New York. Odd fella.
Ah well. Seeya later. We probably won’t see the likes of Day-Lewis again.
