After having done away with his 20-year long muse, New York City, Woody Allen has been exploring the most aesthetically pleasing corners of Europe (including Barcelona and Paris) in his more recent batch of films. To Rome with Love is the latest, and in the trailer you can certainly appreciate the cinematic appeal of the Italian capital.
The scenery, for one, is photogenic to say the least, and the city that forged the architectural and artistic centre of the Italian Renaissance makes the perfect historical context for Allen’s wry observations on modern social-sexual mores. And of course there are few premises more apropos to Allen’s signature skittish bumbling neuroses than the American tourist abroad.
Headed up by Allen himself, the excellent cast includes Alec Baldwin, Jesse Eisenberg (the 21st Century Woody Allen), Greta Gerwig, Penelope Cruz, and the fabulous Australian actress Judy Davis.
